Overview

Have you ever wanted to play with a satellite? Most people who want to learn satellite communications hit the same wall — the field assumes you already have hardware, an amateur radio license, an antenna on the roof, and someone to answer your questions when you get stuck.

BYOS removes all of that. It’s a free, browser-based workshop where you’ll bring your own “satellite” in software, exchange packets with it over a simulated link, and work through the same protocols that real spacecraft use — one step at a time.

What you’ll learn

  • How a ground station sends commands and receives telemetry
  • Framing, encoding, and the constraints of a real RF link
  • How to structure a mission’s operations software
  • Where things break when the link isn’t perfect — and how operators respond

Who it’s for

Curious engineers, security professionals wanting to understand a new domain, students, hobbyists, and anyone else who’s ever looked up at the sky and wondered how the thing up there actually talks to the thing down here.

No prior experience with space, radio, or spacecraft required. If you can read code and follow a tutorial, you can do BYOS.
